VoIP

What is VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)?

VoIP allows you to make telephone calls using a computer network, over a data network like the Internet. VoIP converts the voice signal from your telephone into a digital signal that travels over the internet then converts it back at the other end so you can speak to anyone with a regular phone number. When placing a VoIP call using a phone with an adapter, you'll hear a dial tone and dial just as you always have. VoIP may also allow you to make a call directly from a computer using a conventional telephone or a microphone.

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is an application-layer control used to create, modify and terminate sessions with one or more participants.  It allows you to create two-party, multi-party or multi-telecast sessions that include telephone calls over the internet, multimedia presentations, and multimedia conferences.  SIP is designed to operate separately from the underlying transport layer.  It was originally designed by Henning Chsulzrinne and Mark Handley in 1996, but has since become a somewhat standard protocol in the world of technology.
